Alphabetical Sydney Creative Lab: Celebrating all that is Sydney

A Puggle Post Review

Alphabetical Sydney Creative Lab - A Puggle Post Review

Alphabetical Sydney is not only popular for Sydney-siders, but also for visitors to this iconic Australian city.  And in our eyes, the book is an icon in its own right.

A collaboration between Museum of Sydney and the book’s creators Hilary Bell (author) and Antonia Pesenti (illustrator), Alphabetical Sydney Creative Lab is a celebration of all that is Sydney. The icons, diversity, history, culture, experiences, and of course everyday life, sights and sounds. (Even the Ibis has a role!)

THIS is how kids learn a sense of identity and belonging – through creative play, stories and experiences. This exhibition sparks something within them, and their identity becomes alive through imagination and interactive activities. From toddlers to school age children, this is a wonderful experience to share as a family.

With a Lab Kit in hand, you’ll be guided through this fun exhibition with all kinds of activities along the way. The kit includes a fold-out Me-Map which details the concepts of town, country and the planet we all live in. Connecting the dots, and embracing their creative side, your children will start to understand they are part of not only their immediate surrounds, but to a bigger world.

Captivated! Some things we heard from kid’s very own mouths:

“I know THAT. That’s the Harbour Bridge. It DOES look like a coat hanger.”

“Oh an Ibis. Stinky birds.”

“What’s that sound? Cicadas at night time?”

“We saw those trees in the botanical gardens mum!”

“Let’s make our own bat and hang it in there.”

“I want to write a poem about living in Ashfield.”

“Dad, we’ve been to Taronga Zoo!”

A day out in Sydney with the kids, is not complete without the Alphabetical Sydney Creative Lab. And good news is, it’s on until 12 August. We recommend packing a picnic, and when you’re done at the museum, take a walk down to Circular Quay or the Botanical Gardens and re-live the book AND the exhibition. (You might even be lucky to spot a My Whippy ice cream van…maybe.)

If you love the sound of this exhibition or a fan of Alphabetical Sydney then why not have a read of our recent interview with Alphabetical Sydney’s illustrator Antonia Pesenti.
